Why is Costa Rica a less developed country?

0

Costa Rica is small in both land area and population and has relatively few natural resources. Historically it has relied on coffee exports for income, though now tourism is the largest section of the economy. There is no manufacturing to speak of. It’s per capita income is less than one-fourth that of the United States, but it relatively high by Latin American standards. In Latin America, only Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela and Panama have a higher GDP per capita. Surprisingly though, Costa Ricans have a higher life expectancy than Americans and everyone has access to health care. Costa Ricans are overall more contented and happy with life. Just goes to show you materialism is not the answer. It’s really about having just enough…but the beautiful climate and scenery help too.
