A desert environmnet does not support as much life as pretty much any other environment (tundra and ice cap excepted) therefore if your current environment is changing into a desert then a whole lot of present life is going to have to die off. When the present life includes you then people get concerned. And as the desertification represents a net increase world wide then the net population of the world should go down. As the population continues to increase the food producing pressure on the rest of the world gets greater.
