Why is context so important when learning new language skills?
Perhaps the most important component of text based intervention is that it uses story as context. It is the context of the story that lays the foundation upon which language learning takes place. The story, as written on the page, is a stable, reliable structure that is rich in language and can be returned to again and again. The context of the story provides a familiar foundation for students. And it’s the familiarity of the story that is so important when a child attempts to learn difficult language concepts. With the importance of context in mind, I created my own story – ‘Guff, the Neanderthal Boy’ and embedded a large amount of content rich language in the text. The story works well as a narrative, but its prime purpose is to allow you, as clinician or teacher, to help your students develop oral and written language skills..
