Colony collapse is the sudden and mysterious disappearance of honey bee colonies. The hives appear to be abandoned due to the absence of adult bees without the presence of dead bees while the larva and food are still present. In essence the colony mysteriously collapsed. The Mary Celeste was a ghost ship in the 1800s. The ship was found sailing in the ocean with no crew or passengers and no bodily remains aboard. It has never been discovered what happened to the people on the ship. The ship was still loaded with provisions and the captain’s log was still in his cabin. Due to the fact that it appears the crew mysteriously abandoned the ship and it appears the bees mysteriously abandon their hive, colony collapse is sometimes referred to as Mary Celeste syndrome.
