Why is collecting and mapping the EDI important?
By using the EDI to map the children’s state of development at kindergarten across BC, we can identify and understand the influence of socio-economic and community factors on child development. Previously, there was no way to monitor early child development or to understand how local circumstances could be changed to improve the life chances of children. The project helps communities: • Assess children’s state of development to participate in and benefit from school activities • Reveal differences in children’s development across neighbourhoods • Assess how well they are doing in supporting young children and families Measuring children’s state of development is important because it reflects children’s early development, which influences school success, health and well-being later in life.
