Why is classical music popular and ripped off?
First, let me dispel a couple of myths: 1) Classical music has always been a minority genre. There have always been other types of music running alongside classical music – the equivalent of our ‘pop’ music if you like. In the past this has included folk songs, tavern songs, hymns and anthems, spirituals, parlour ballads and traditional ditties. Some of these have left only scant records behind them, but we have the printed music of (just for example) for Victorian parlour songs (which did a roaring trade in sheet music) and ‘popular’ songs written by ‘classical’ composers (eg tavern songs by Purcell). 2) Classical music doesn’t boost ANYONE’s IQ. This is a silly myth. While it has been proved that listening to classical music can slightly improve concentration, it certainly canNOT make you smarter. Not even Mozart. Why is classical music ripped off? Because modern musicians (whether they do it publicly or not) recognise that classical music is the foundation of all other music we hear
