Why is classical music not as popular as it used to be?

Your question is redundant because it is wrong. Classical music is probably more popular now than it has ever been. Just because you don’t hear being pumped out of every electrical orifice, that doesn’t mean people aren’t listening to it elsewhere. Edit: I just saw what ‘nsw105’ wrote, stating that classical music was the ‘pop’ music of the time it was created, which is a total nonsense. Classical music has NEVER been the popular music of any time – there has always been a popular culture running alongside ‘art’ music, be it tudor tavern songs, Victorian parlour ballads or 1950s swing. Classical music has always been a minority interest. Once only available to the upper classes, it is now more freely available and listened to than ever. Which is why your question is self-defeating.
