Why is civil legal aid important?
Fair and equal justice is a fundamental principal of our democracy. Our laws guarantee basic rights and protections for all of us-not just those who can afford a lawyer. However, every year three out of four low-income households in Washington face an urgent civil legal problem, and of those, over 80 percent cannot get any help or legal representation. For these people, the consequences are often severe. Civil legal aid helps families in crisis return to safe, productive lives. It helps preempt a spiral of costly social problems and often means the difference between shelter and homelessness, food on the table and hunger, economic stability and bankruptcy, productive work and unemployment.
