Why is Certain Collectible Glass Called Depression Glass?
Depression glass is defined as glass that was primiraly made during the depprsion era of the 1930’s ( but also covers glass made late 20’s to early 40’s). It was very inexpensively made. Many pieces had very rough mold lines or edges; debree can be seen in some; measurements of the same pattern may differ 1/4″ to 1/2″ in size; etc. It came in colors of green, amber, pink, red, yellow, white and crystal. It was turned out in quanity and often it was used as promotions or inducements to buy other products. Movies would give different pieces out each week of a certain pattern to encourage people to come back the follow weeks to finish getting the complete set. Department stores or 5 & 10 stores, like the old Woolworths, would give away different pieces to get you into their stores. Food products, like old fashion oatmeal, jelly, etc., would enduce people to buy their products so they could get the complete set of a certain pattern.
