Why is celebrating World Water Day is so important?
Water runs in our veins, as blood, and moves through our cells. Life evolved in the waters of the young Earth, as we also floated in the waters of our mother’s womb. The water cycles on this planet keep every living thing alive. To celebrate World Water Day is to keep before our eyes the very stuff of which we are made, and on which we depend for life. It also binds us together as one human race on one planet. There are forces tearing us apart today, including wars over water and our access to it. World Water Day is a claim on us all to respect our common birth in the waters of Earth. In some ways we are remembering a sort of common baptism for all human beings. It is no accident that Jesus said “Even a cup of cold water given my name will not go without its reward.” He sensed that the very least thing we can do, as his followers, is to offer each other water, the stuff of life.
