Why is canine detection becoming more common?
Due in large part to the increasing number of incidents of drugs and public violence, a growing need for increased school security and drug free workplaces has arisen across the country. Schools and employers are allowing detection canines and drug dogs into their environments as a strategy to improve safety in schools and assist in drug abuse prevention. Drug dogs in school can provide an excellent service for weapons and drug detection. Supporters say that after the program is implemented, the drug dogs rarely turn up illegal substances but still provide a powerful deterrent. Some school principals and employers, however, are divided on the tactic of drug testing in school and in the workplace because they fear the seizure of contraband could reflect badly on their schools and companies. The harsh reality is that narcotic drugs, alcohol, and weapons are pervasive in schools, and account for 70% of work-related injuries.
