Why is Canada negotiating self-government?
The Government of Canada believes Aboriginal people have the right to govern themselves; to make decisions about matters that affect their communities and to exercise the responsibility that comes with self-government. The Government of Canada has recognized that Aboriginal people have an “inherent right” of self-government guaranteed in the Canadian Constitution.
