School is, in theory, supposed to be a ‘safe environment’ – so there should be no need for weapons (which should only be used in self defence anyway). However if there were kids walking around with knives in their pocket, school would not be such a ‘safe environment’, and so the need for self defence weapons would be greater – it is a vicious circle. Pubescent teenagers are more likely to react to upsetting or frustrating situations in a more irrational manner than an adult might. For this reason, if a weapon is close to hand when two hormonal teens are having a spat, it would be more likely to spell danger than with two adults who might generally be in better control of their emotions. Children younger than teenagers will not yet have a fully developed perception of danger, nor a great enough understanding of the consequences of their actions to be entrusted with a weapon.
