Why is Boyne River School property important?
For decades thousands of school children explored the Bruce Trail at the Boyne Natural Science Outdoor Centre, rambling across its meadows, forests and streams. For many city children, it was their first real experience with the wonders of nature. Today this school stands empty and its owners, the Toronto District School Board, have a mandate to sell the buildings and surrounding land. That’s hundreds of acres of acres of forest, meadows and streams – all contained within the Boyne Valley Life Science Area of Natural and Scientific Interest. The beautiful Boyne River School property is home to: • 11 orchid species • 38 locally rare plant species • 84 breeding bird species • 14 reptile and amphibian species • 28 native mammal species (including the Smoky Shrew, Fisher and River Otter) We’re committed to keeping this irreplacable land, where so many young people connected with nature for the first time, natural and accessible for the next generation of explorers.
