Why is birth registration so important?
Birth registration means proof of identity. It is essential to a childs place in the world. Without this proof of birth, a child could lose out on her basic rights before the law as well as to education, health care, and social services. She can be more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, and can be denied her rights to a family and income. Article 7 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child states: The child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name, the right to acquire a nationality and, as far as possible the right to know and be cared for by his or her parents.
