Why is Bextra prescribed?
Bextra is a painkiller used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, painful menstruation and other types of acute pain. It is a member of the family of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) called “COX-2 inhibitors.” Other drugs in this family include Celebrex and Vioxx. Bextra is believed to fight pain and inflammation by inhibiting the effect of a natural enzyme called COX-2. COX-2 inhibitors offer many of the same benefits as aspirin. However, they do not share its blood-thinning effects. The generic name for Bextra is Valdecoxib. Is Bextra Dangerous? Yes. Bextra has been pulled off the market because it is believed to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. It might also cause stomach and intestinal bleeding.
