Why is Bethel School District implementing Positive Behavior and Intervention Support?
PBIS was initiated in Bethel because it emphasizes a systems approach to proactive school-wide discipline and individual behavior support. Faced with a range of social behavior challenges, Bethel is striving to increase the consistency, effectiveness, and efficiency with which schools meet the social behavioral needs of all students. Bethel School District’s goals in using the PBS approach are to: (a) improve school and classroom climate; (b) reduce unnecessary office discipline referrals, suspensions, and expulsions; (c) provide teachers, students, and families with a predictable and positive structure for improving student behavior; (d) enhance the continuum of behavior support for students who display significant behavior challenges and their families; and (e) increase the efficiency, effectiveness, and relevance of the school and district’s efforts to provide behavior support systems.
