Why is being overweight is associated with an increased risk after menopause but a decreased risk before menopause?
Observational studies show that being overweight is associated with an increased risk for breast cancer after menopause and decreased risk before menopause. There are currently no studies that show why this is. One thought is that after menopause a small amount of estrogen is still metabolized from body fat. This small amount lengthens the amount of time a woman is exposed to estrogen.
