Why is basketball center, Alex Tyus in the news lately?

This is getting flat-out strange. Florida forward Alex Tyus, Florida’s second-leading scorer last season, is now the second player to transfer from the Gators in the last two weeks. After averaging 12.5 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game, Tyus becomes the 10th Gator to transfer since the 2003-04 season. Freshman forward Allan Chaney left last week, and point guard Jai Lucas bolted in November. Now Nick Calathes could be the fourth player gone in the last six months if he opts to stay in the NBA draft, while 2009 signee DeShawn Painter already backed out of his letter of intent earlier this month. “Coach [ Billy] Donovan and I had a chance to talk about my future and we agreed on the best course of action,” said Tyus in a statement. “I want to thank my coaches, my teammates and the fans here at Florida. I enjoyed my two years here.” Donovan said Tyus is a “great kid” and enjoyed coaching him, but the visions of Tyus and the program didn’t match. As a skinny 6-foot-8 forward

Alex Tyus: Donovan to lose another Gator GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida forward Alex Tyus, the team’s second-leading scorer last season, has decided to transfer. Coach Billy Donovan announced Tyus’ departure Friday, a move that leaves the Gators with little frontcourt depth heading into next season. Guard Nick Calathes declared for the NBA draft, forward Allan Chaney opted to transfer and incoming freshman DeShawn Painter asked to be released from his scholarship. Throw in Marreese Speights (left early for NBA), Jonathan Mitchell (transferred last spring), and Jai Lucas (transferred just days before this past season), and Donovan could lose as many as seven players in about a year.
