Windows XP Service Pack 2 now features a fairly useful firewall which will alert you if a program tries to contact the internet. ZoneAlarm is another excellent free firewall that alerts you if a program contacts the internet. autoMATE should not contact the internet, if it does then your PC maybe infected with a virus. There are a number of good free virus checkers, for example http://www.grisoft.com or http://housecall.trendmicro.com which may help you.
