Why is artificial trans fat (trans fatty acids) bad?
The body needs unsaturated fatty acids (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) for proper growth, development and maintenance of good health; however, not all fatty acids are beneficial and studies have shown that artificial trans fat raises total blood cholesterol levels and LDL (“bad” cholesterol) while lowering HDL (“good” cholesterol) levels. This can increase the risk of coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attacks and increases the risk of strokes.
