Why is Ares not very popular as a patron god in Wicca and Paganism?

I know a couple of people who have Ares as their patron God, so you are not alone. I actually went through this same thing because Cerridwen is my matron Goddess, and people tend to see the Crone as more negative or “evil.” There’s light and dark to each God/dess, but few people seem to recognize that and embrace it. There’s light and dark to everything and everyone. So long as things are working for you, it doesn’t really matter what other people think about it. He’s probably considered negative because he is more of a warrior, as you said. It’s like Kali, she’s the Goddess (if I’m remembering correctly) of destruction as well as creation (destruction first, though, because you can’t have creation without destruction, to create an omlet you have to destroy a few eggs, etc.). Hope this makes sense!
