There are far more accurate methods of testing drugs, such as testing on tissue samples and computer models that actually provide results accurate to humans. Vioxx was a painkiller that was prescribed to arthritis sufferers. In line with standard practice, Vioxx was tested in at least two animal species before entering human trials. The experiments on animals indicated that the drug was safe and even beneficial to the heart. But when it went on to the market it caused an estimated 140,000 heart attacks and strokes.
