For valid information regarding the use of digital photography in forensic science go to the SWGIT or SWGDE website. State and federal courtroom challenges in the discipline have already occurred. Many good papers have been published by the individuals who have had to answer courtroom challenges. These papers can be found by Googling “SWGIT” or “SWGDE”.

There’s been some talk in the forensic community that film (especially b&w) was the best for doing enlargements for shoe/tire impression comparisons, bite mark comparisons, etc. However, many examiners have agreed that digital technology has developed to the point where 1:1 enlargements can be made with little/no pixelization, can can be changed to b&w if desired. So at my agency, we don’t use film for anything anymore.
