It is not an underground activists group which plots against the alcoholic in an effort to get him sober or keep him sober. If the alcoholic is helped through Alanon, it is a side benefit only. The why of Alanon is to offer help and serenity to the person whose life is affected by the alcoholic. Alanon uses the exact same Twelve Steps that the A.A. people use. My wife, though not an alcoholic, was also powerless over alcohol. She was powerless over the alcohol that I drank. Her life had become unmanageable in the process of living with an active alcoholic.
