As strike threat looms, Stop & Shop talks with union By ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: 08:40 a.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2010 HARTFORD — Contract talks are resuming between Stop & Shop officials and union leaders representing about 40,000 supermarket workers in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island who plan to strike if a deal isn’t reached. Negotiations between the Quincy, Mass.-based chain and the United Food and Commercial Workers union are set to continue at 10 a.m. this morning in Providence, R.I. The contract expired Feb. 20, but has been extended during the talks. Brian Petronella, president of the union’s Local 371 in Connecticut, said this morning that if a deal isn’t reached by the end of the day, the union locals may discuss whether to give the company a 24-hour strike notice. Stop & Shop spokeswoman Faith Weiner declined to comment on specifics for today’s talks.
