Why is a signet ring destroyed or never used again after someones death?

Many armigerous families will pass the signet ring down from father to son. I have never heard of one being destroyed. Sadly, some get buried! That is what happened when my grandfather died – his daughter (my aunt) could not bear to pull it off of his finger. I have a wax impression of it, but I will have to have a new ring made. My last quote was something near $5000!!!! Great Seals, which are the official seal of a reigning monarch are a different story. They are the thing applied to documents (like bills becoming laws) that makes them official. Usually, the paper becomes embossed, the seal being pressed into the paper. I am not sure if they are destroyed, but each is unique to that monarch, and each new monarch will have a new seal made.
