Why is a sacroiliac joint injection helpful?
A sacroiliac joint injection of numbing medicine and steroid provides pain relief when this joint is the cause of pain. What happened during the procedure? An IV is started and sedation is given. On the x-ray table, the patient is placed on the abdomen. The skin on the low back is cleaned with alcohol and Betadine. Following this, the physician numbs the area of injection with numbing medicine. The physician then directs a needle, using x-ray guidance into the joint. A small amount of x-ray contrast (dye) is injected to confirm proper needle position in the joint space. Then, a small mixture of numbing medicine (anesthetic) and anti-inflammatory (steroid) is injected.
