Why is a new harbour needed and why is it being built in Vuosaari?
Moving the operations of the West Harbour and North Harbour to Vuosaari will reduce traffic downtown and make space available for housing that would otherwise have to be built somewhere else. Alternate sites are located about 26 kilometres from the centre of Helsinki and would signify about 73 million kilometres of additional traffic a year. Vuosaari is an ideal location for a harbour. The fairway will be nearly straight and simulations have shown that it will be safe and easily navigable. Vuosaari is only a short distance from main arteries and Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (14 km), and the harbour site is not adjacent to housing. The new harbour and business park will create new jobs in eastern Helsinki, which is mainly residential.
