Why is a Giclée more expensive than a litho print?
The cost of printing a single Giclée print is substantially higher than the unit cost of printing a photo-mechanical lithographic reproduction. An entire edition of litho prints is produced using acid-free paper and paid for when the edition is printed. The larger the edition the smaller the unit cost. Our Giclée prints are printed one at a time, as ordered, on premium archival watercolor paper. Some artists also print on canvas. Rich Thistle Studio prints only on archival watercolor papers. The resulting print reproduces the original painting with amazing clarity, color, image quality and sharpness, placing these prints in a league of their own. Rich Thistle Giclée prints are offered in very limited editions creating a more exclusive product than larger litho editions. The technology is sophisticated, requiring skilled technicians and expensive specialized equipment.
