Why is a former mail room clerk suing the NYC parks over firing?
Transsexual sues NYC Parks Department over firing. NEW YORK (AP) – A former mail room clerk for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation says she was fired from her job because she is a transsexual. Chanel Birden says co-workers made fun of her and called her vulgar names because of her gender change. The 27-year-old Harlem resident says she worked in the department’s Central Park mail room for two months until she was fired May 19. She filed a lawsuit in Manhattan alleging gender discrimination. The lawsuit asks unspecified damages. Birden’s lawyer Derek Smith said Thursday the reason given for the firing was lateness. A city Law Department spokeswoman said they hadn’t seen the lawsuit and couldn’t comment. Smith said his client takes female hormones but has not had sex-change surgery.
