Why is a doorknob at the edge of the door?
Because the further away the handle is from the hinges, the easier it is to open the door. If you screw a handle to the middle of a door you will find that you need to pull harder. Also, the handle is usually where the lock is fitted, so the edge is the best place for this also, as the lock will be stringer if it only covers a short distance.
