Why is a clever villain important for a detective story?
stupid villains are easy to catch – and there would be no story. The more the detective is thwarted by the clever villain the more interesting it gets – especially if the villain seemingly is too clever for the hero, but for the story to win out there is always the villains fatal flaw – something he/she saw as insignificant or meaningless that quickly unravels their misdeeds.
