Why is a cable company, like EastLink, allowed to offer local telephone service?

0

EastLink is more than a cable company. With the launch of EastLink High Speed Internet and EastLink Telephone, we now offer a full slate of communication and entertainment services. In 1996, CRTC deregulation cleared the way for local telephone service competition, permitting cable companies to enter into the local telephone service market for the first time. We were the first cable company in Canada to launch telephone service because we had been anticipating this opportunity and have been upgrading our delivery network for several years.
