Why is a BRT project being proposed when the LRT is what is really required to solve the congestion problems on the Gosport peninsula?

Central Government refused to finance the proposed LRT project, despite significant efforts to promote it by Hampshire County Council. Whilst the BRT does not provide all of the benefits that LRT would have done, it goes a significant way to providing improvements in public transport on the peninsula, with high-quality and reliable links proposed to many key locations in South East Hampshire. The offer of potential funding from Central Government to pay for the first phase of BRT is seen as a positive sign that there remains support for improvements in the area, and is an excellent opportunity to prove that we can deliver local infrastructure improvements, which will hopefully stand us in good stead for future opportunities.
