His number is 666.” It is correct that in most modern editions of the Greek New Testament, the number is spelled out as “six hundred sixty-six” (in Greek, of course), however in the various manuscripts this appears in a variety of forms: “six hundred sixty-six,” “666,” “six six six,” etc. Also, as pointed out elsewhere, in a handful of manuscripts, this number appears as “616;” in one manuscript it is given as “646.” There has been some recent discussion of the representation of the number in Revelation. Even when Greek NT manuscripts use a numerical rather than verbal representation, they use three different symbols for the digits, chi=600, xi=60, and stigma=6 (stigma or digamma being an obsolete Greek letter).
