I think a lot of it has to do with so many “modern” changes. In the sixties people’s style and changes of attitude are greatly attributed to the Vietnam War, and people’s response… drug use became more prevalent and open– then things transitioned into the disco era later on and different changes of attitude, style and Drug use as well took a different turn.. The music is representative of theses times….And Both Piece warrior an oz have good points. This was a time were electronics (and experimentation of), became more incorperated into the music, so it was a big change from the sweet 50s. But most universal trends are linked to historic events and especially music, as a universal “expression” of what’s happened before, what’s happening now….And last but not least, many present day music bands claim various rock groups from those eras(60s/70s) as influences whose styles have inspired the music they create today.
