Why India is the most important country for British during colonial time?
Simple, one word for you: MONEY EDIT: You probably need a better answer, so here it is: India was a very, very wealthy territory. It had gemstones, cotton, tea, spices and a very big population. The population allowed not only the exploitation of resources in India but elsewhere in the empire. After Britain banned slavery in the 1830s they used indentured labourers from India to replace the plantation workers who’d been freed. It’s why there’s a pretty large Asian population in the Caribbean. Britain also used Indian labourers and more educated Indians as administrators in the African colonies, it’s why there were Asians in Uganda to be expelled by Idi Amin and why there’s still an Indian population in Kenya, South Africa and other former British colonies.
