Why in the past, did Catholics abstain from eating eggs during Lent?

0

Lent was a time of abstinence and fasting and so all luxuries were given up when it back. Things like meat, butter, milk, sugar and eggs were considered luxury foods. This is why we have Pancake Tuesday the day before Lent begins as people tried to use up all their butter, milk, sugar and eggs because they couldn’t use them for the next 40 days.
