Why I stay in the Navy… (4.00 / 3) More than 12 years?
Check Opportunity to do some real cool shit? Check Money to pay for college? Check A bit of patriotism thrown in? You bet (Sorry to use my bosses rhetorical device, but I thought it was appropriate.) I really hate what is going on right now. I watched co-workers go off to Iraq and come back and never speak of what they did or saw, not because of what they did was hush hush or horrible (I have comrades who were on the front page of the WaPo in April and May of 2003) but because it is what is expected of them. No judgement as to the validity of the exercise. They did what they were told. And they came home. End of story. I think that that is bottom line. I saw in the another diary about why people join in the first place. I know the Navy has given me some sort of direction, skills, money and an out from a shitty home life (I like to joke that when I turned 17 the choice was run away and join the circus or enlist.
