Well, there are a number of reasons for this. To be honest we feel that the way the big publishing houses do business is something of the past. If you’re not J.K. Rowling (you know…Harry Potter) then in general you will not get a very good deal….especially if you are writing for a niche market audience such as sanitary engineers. Although the publishing house will pay for (part of) the editing and the actual printing of the book, you will get a low commission and then only when the number of copies sold exceeds a certain threshold. Adrianus is still waiting for his first royalties of the Anaerobic Sewage Treatment book from 1994 and that book was a reasonable best-seller….. Nowadays it is possible to do a lot of the editorial and layout work yourself and we contacted a small and eager publishing house (Quist Publishing) to guide us in the peculiarities of this process.
