Why have there been changes to financial incentives for ITT?
The government continually reviews its package of support and financial incentives for teacher training to ensure that it is reflective of the current situation. Bursaries and golden hellos were introduced during a time of acute teacher shortage. In most subjects that teacher shortage has now alleviated and it is not necessary to incentivise teacher training in the way that has been done in the past. The package for the next academic year reflects a continued focus on science, maths and modern languages, where there is a greater demand for teachers and recruitment is most challenging. The new bursary rates reflect the current position of falling pupil numbers in secondary education, higher demand for ITT places, and current financial limitations.
