Why have the new procedures been introduced?
The NAS as a whole is aimed at not only increasing safety and efficiency but also bringing Australian aviation into line with best international practice. The new procedures at non-towered aerodromes increase safety and efficiency of operations in Class G airspace. Under the previous system, there were three types of non-towered aerodromes – Mandatory Broadcast Zones (MBZs), Common Traffic Advisory Frequencies (CTAFs) and Multicoms. In the case of MBZs and CTAFs, “standard” dimensions existed but, as all pilots know, these dimensions varied considerably throughout Australia. The previous defined volumes of airspace did not always capture all of the operations – for example, instrument approach procedures – that occur at an airfield. In addition, there were no criteria to determine whether an airfield should be classified MBZ or CTAF. As a result, some CTAFs were busier with a greater traffic mix than some MBZs, despite the fact that CTAFs had smaller volumes of airspace and permitted n
