Why Have Prices for Klimt’s Paintings Risen So? Wednesday January 3, 2007 A few decades ago Gustav Klimt’s paintings were “relatively ignored by the art establishment”, now they’re “among the most expensive ever sold”. In her article Gold Rush in ARTnews Eileen Kinsella looks at the reasons, and the motivations of art collector Ronald Lauder (co-founder of Neue Galerie and chairman emeritus of the Museum of Modern Art). Given the recent discussions on the Painting Forum about the impact of seeing Van Gogh’s paintings in real life, rather than as reproductions, I found it fascinating to read how Lauder described going on his own to Vienna specifically to see Klimt paintings.
