Why have nongovernmental organizations [NGOs] like the environmentalists gained such influence in the debate over globalization?
The secrecy [of governments and bankers] has been very largely responsible for the creation of this big NGO movement. [The NGOs] really have been able to satisfy the public, with some justification, that there are things going on that the governments don’t want people to know about. I’ve always been concerned about secrecy in our government. When I was a Cabinet minister [in Canada], I was amazed at the paranoia that existed. Q: So what can be done about that? A: The NGO community is not monolithic. There are trade unions and anarchists and everyone in between. It’s very divided. We have to enlist the support of the NGOs when we believe they’re on the right road. They can offset some of the negatives coming from the others that are a bit more radical.
