Why have I heard that singing in contemporary or “pop” styles is wrong or bad for the voice?
Many classical voice teachers may tell you that training in contemporary vocal styles such as that offered by Creber Music could be detrimental to a student’s singing voice. This is not the case; what is really at issue is stylistic preference. Modern and classical singing styles are often based on conflicting ideas and techniques – so a student who wants to become a classical singer could, indeed, be hindered by training in contemporary styles. Similarly, a student who wants to sing contemporary music could be hindered by strictly classical training. However, BOTH kinds of training can be rewarding and beneficial – as long as the student is inspired by the teacher and the curriculum. The important thing is to determine what sort of music the student wants to learn and perform, and choose a teacher and a program accordingly (see FAQ #7).
