Why hasn Metro replaced or retrofitted all of the 1000-series rail cars?
Replacing almost 300 of the 1000-series rail cars would cost over $800 million, and retrofitting them would be nearly as costly as replacing them. The June 22 accident adds to the importance of replacing these cars as soon as possible. We are working aggressively to secure funding. Metro’s oldest rail cars, the 1000-series, are safe to operate, and they have been maintained and rehabilitated throughout their 30 to 33 years of use.
