Why hasn’t anyone isolated the pathogen that causes Alzheimer’s?
The degradation of the brain (i.e. the plaque build up) is caused by inflammation, and inflammation can be controlled by NSAID’s, but the correct dosage has yet to be established.Producing a drug to remove the plaque may be of some benefit, but money would be better spent locating and treating the source of the inflammation (i.e. either viral or bacterial).Research has shown that there is a high probability of a pathogen being involved. It is likely that the person or persons who isolate the pathogen will win the Nobel prize in medicine. The potential for NSAID’s as a management tool for this class of disease is seen by business interests as non-profitable, therefore there are no large scale studies on the efficacy of the proposed treatment are planned, and smaller studies have produced mixed results. The last time I asked this question, the only reply I received was from a representative of a pharmaceutical company.
