Why has the tv show “Glee” become so popular?”

May 19, 2009: an episode of “American Idol” ended, the credits rolled, and then FOX premiered the pilot of its new mega-project: “Glee.” The ratings for the premiere were…less than satisfactory, taking in less than half of the “American Idol” audience. But FOX is prepared to gun “Glee” and ready to launch. Immediately after the pilot aired, FOX placed it online for viewing at sites like Hulu. People viewed, reviewed, and the votes are in. Most people…like “Glee.” “Glee” was first viewed as the “High School Musical” of television, but as soon as you watch the pilot, it takes away that view almost completely. The production staff of this project knew what they were getting into and obviously they purposely steered away from this paradigm. don’t know how I didn’t make the connection but Glee (which I’m SOOOOO excited for) is from Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) who made the very awesome/campy/awesome Popular and now he returns to his high school roots and adds in showtunes. As if Popular couldn’t be gayer. Apparently it now can!: Seriously, just that line from Jane Lynch alone makes this a must see show (and almost more in tune with those Apatow comedies she’s usually in than one would think this show might be). Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester: “If you think this is hard, I’m living with hepatitis. THAT’S HARD” Lea Michelle seems like she’s going to be an AWESOME Diva bitch!

One of the best things about this melodic dramedy that focuses on a downtrodden high school glee club is its quirky, offbeat nature. Just when you think the show leans on stock campus types, it applies a few fresh twists. Just when it seems to be veering too far into sugary sweetness, it hits you with a blast of dark humor or snarky sarcasm. And just when you’re convinced its musical tastes are so VH1, it busts out tunes from Amy Winehouse and Kanye West. At a time when so much television fare enables us to connect the dots and know exactly whodunit, the unpredictability of “Glee” is enthralling. No wonder we continue to sing its praises.
