Why has the sea level rise figure of 0.8 m been proposed?
Climate change is causing sea levels to rise. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC ) provides a complex set of sea level rise projections which are presented as a range of values for six future world development scenarios. However planners must choose a single value to describe anticipated sea level rise to allow this factor to be considered in determining whether a place is suited to development. These considerations must be based on the anticipated life of a development or land use and the potential risks to the community during that life time from coastal erosion or inundation.
